Air Jordan II (1987) - From the home country of spaghetti
The Air Jordan II (2) was released in 1986/87.
Michael scored an average 37.1 points per game in the 86-87 season and became the first
player since Wilt Chamberlain to top 3,000 points in a season. In November/December he
scored 40 points or more in nine straight games. On April 16th he scored a total
of 61 points against the Atlanta Hawks setting a new NBA record. Michael also played in
the All-Star Game, won the Slam-Dunk Championship, and was named to the All-NBA First Team.
No black leather in Italy?
The Air Jordan II was designed by Bruce Kilgore and just as its predecessor it showed a great
innovative design. The low-tops were very stylish, produced in Italy and were far from
the ordinary basketball shoe.
Surprisingly this is the only Air Jordan ever that has not been made in a black version. There
were sketches and prototypes of a black leather AJ II but it never became reality. Why?
...noone knows...
Another retro setback
The white/black AJ II's were retroed in 1994 in limited quantities. Just like
the I's they sold very poorly and were found on discount racks on Footlockers
nationwide.
Retro goes black...
"Maybe a re-retro of this shoe is not very far away. The I's were just released
and they have been selling extremely well. Also maybe a retro+ model in black
leather would be interesting, wouldn't it?"
This is what was on the site before 2004. Because in 2004 a re-retro of the Air Jordan II
was made. This time not only in popular original colors, but in a black version. It was nice
to see it made and one still wondered why it wasn't made originally.
...and Nu'Retro
As with the Air Jordan I a Nu'Retro was also produced. Actually it was made in 2003, before the
original retro II releases. This time the resemblance to its originator was more obvious than when
it came to the Nu'Retro I's.
At present there are no plans for further retro II's, but as with all Air Jordan's I guess it's just a matter
of time before they return again...
